What’s New in Birth Control?
Birth control methods are always changing. These new methods
of birth control may be available at a Family Planning Center near you
and are available by prescription only.
Ortho Evra™ (the “Patch”)
What is it?
Highly effective hormonal birth control patch that is worn on the skin
of the abdomen, buttocks, upper torso, or upper outer arm.
Prevents pregnancy in the same way as birth control pills. The patch
is worn for 1 week at a time and is replaced with a new patch on the same
day of the week, for 3 consecutive weeks. A patch-free week allows for
a menstrual period.
Effectiveness: 99% effective
Advantages
Does not interrupt sex.
Do not need to remember to take every day.
Regulates menstrual cycle.
Disadvantages
Does not protect against Sexually Transmitted
Infections (STIs).
Must remove and replace patch weekly.
There can be health risks. Consult your health care provider.
How much does it cost?
$12 - $30 per month

NuvaRing ®
What is it?
Hormonal ring the size of a silver dollar made of flexible plastic that
is placed in the vagina for 3 weeks at a time, then removed to allow for
a menstrual cycle.
Prevents pregnancy in the same way as birth
control pills.
Effectiveness. 98% effective
Advantages
Does not interrupt sex.
Do not need to remember to take every day.
Regulates menstrual cycle.
Disadvantages
Does not protect against Sexually Transmitted
Infections (STIs).
May take practice to insert and remove correctly.
Must be comfortable touching your body.
There can be health risks. Consult your health care provider.
How much does it cost?
